Survey/Poll

Please take a moment to answer the survey located at the bottom of this page. We will periodically post questions regarding topics from the discussions in this blog.

Anonymous said...: I am surprised that 21% of respondents to date have selected "No internship, on the job training"

Of those people who have selected this option, are you a person who has not completed an internship, or are you a current intern or dietitian?

Anonymous said...: I think there still needs to be an inquiry into whether there even needs to be internships and if so then interns need to be seen as being on a more level playing field with the RD's.

Perhaps a model where the intern works half days with the RD and half days to do reading/assignments etc - as mentioned by another poster. I doubt RD's are lugging home journals and textbooks at night - they do it during their work hours.

Then I think compensation could be designed around the time that the intern is doing dietitian work.

That would be a win/win/win situation.; April 12, 2011 at 5:15 p.m.
Anonymous said...: If that suggestion were taken - then each RD could take 2 interns at a time and thus double the numbers who could enter the program without shortening the internship!; April 12, 2011 at 6:08 p.m.

iSAD Manifesto

Our intent is not to criticize one particular university or internship program, organization, or individual person. Instead we encourage you to read the stories posted here as an indication of how the current system affects students. We ask that change be urgently addressed in order to prevent further harm to those it purports to serve.

To those who have the ability to change the process and the system, we respectfully request that you:

a) engage in broader and transparent consultation with the primary stakeholders of the internship process; current students and interns;

b) eliminate barriers to practical training programs such that all qualified applicants are guaranteed an internship position regardless of previous volunteer experience, race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, record of offences, marital status, family status or disability (from the Ontario Human Rights Commission: http://www.ohrc.on.ca/en/); and

c) provide adequate financial support/relief for interns.

d) To program directors: provide access to confidential counselling services to any and all students who require it for the time until a new internship process is fully operational.
